Not all digital Xbox One games will get demos, Microsoft reveals

Manufacturer won't insist that third parties release trials on the service

Here's a titbit we missed from last night's IGN AMA with Microsoft's Marc Whitten - publishers aren't required to release trial versions of Xbox One games, as they currently are on Xbox Live Arcade.

"Not all games will have demos like Xbox Live Arcade games have had on Xbox 360," Whitten told the site. "That said, we are going to work on lots of ways to make it easy for you to find and try new games on the service."

Not especially pleasant news, but it's worth bearing in mind that game demos can be costly and counter-productive to create - according to a study by games academic and developer Jesse Schell, releasing a demo may actually reduce sales of the game itself.

Is it time to let go?
