Choose your hero: meet the nine playable races of The Elder Scrolls Online

The Aldmeri Dominion, Ebonheart Pact and Daggerfall Covenant examined

The nine playable races of The Elder Scrolls Online are split into three warring factions - the Daggerfall Covenant, the Aldmeri Dominion and the Ebonheart Pact. Each individual race possesses its own innate skills and abilities, and it's important to choose the right one for your preferred style of play.

Here's a bit of backstory on each of TESO's playable races, and recommendations as to which of the four character classes they'd be best suited to (if you've played prior Elder Scrolls games, of course, you should have a fair sense of things already). Got anything to add? Let us know in the comments.

The Altmer (High Elves) - Aldmeri Dominion
The High Elves, or, Altmer, are the original settlers of Tamriel, residing primarily in Summerset Isle. The most proficient magic users in the land, they are also the most ancient of all playable races - which has made them rather uppity when it comes to other species. The Aldmeri Dominion alliance is led by Queen Ayrenn, a High Elf ruler whose plan is to place all of Tamriel under elven control.

If you're dead set on taking up the sorcerer class, the Altmer's naturally high intellect make them the best starting choice. If TESO's concept art is anything to go by, they also know how to look good in a set of shiny armour. When making your race and class choices, bear in mind that whilst any character is able to wear any armour class in The Elder Scrolls Online, cloth tends to grant higher intellect boosts, whilst heavy armour is a no-brainer for tanks and melee attackers.

The Khajit - Aldmeri Dominion
Cat race the Khajit are naturally stealthy, making them adept assassins, rogues and thieves. They are also skilled traders, with a thriving black market culture. A proud people, they joined forces with the elves after Queen Ayrenn helped them bounce back from a nasty, country-wide bout of Knahaten Flu - only fair when you consider the amount of furball-hawking she must have had to endure.

Players choosing a Khajit character will be Suthay-raht, one of the most common subspecies of the race. They're probably most suited to The Elder Scrolls Online's Nightblade (rogue) class, which uses daggers, small swords, and magic to weaken enemies, and deals extra damage when striking unexpectedly.

The Bosmer (Wood Elves) - Aldmeri Dominion
The agile, nature-loving wood elves joined forces with fellow Tamriel elder races the High Elves and Khajit to curb the damage that might be done by the forces of Tamriel's younger, more impulsive species.

Since the Bosmer spend most of their days skulking and sneaking around about the forests and woodlands of Valenwood, they're gifted hunters and can be excellent, discreet scouts. They're also known for producing some of the best archers in the world, so are probably the best choice of race if you plan to pick your enemies off with arrows from afar. The Aldmeri Dominion's capital, Elden Root, is situated in the Bosmer homeland of Valenwood.
