Mass Effect 4 producer reveals new BioWare IP, promises "new way for you to explore the Mass Effect universe"

"We are developing a whole new universe," says Hudson

I'd assume the goodly Casey Hudson isn't just talking about a spaceship when he says "new way for you to explore", though a new kind of spaceship is probably in the offing. More likely, he's talking about some sort of... functionality. Is it the smartphone kind, or the motion control kind, or the cloud-based kind? Only time will tell. Get a move on, time.

"We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game, and it's going to be a new thing," Hudson (who serves as executive producer for the series) told audiences during a Mass Effect retrospective at PAX East in Boston over the weekend (via Kotaku). "We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you've come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience but start something fresh and new - a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect."

Here's what we currently know about the next Mass Effect, which is in development primarily at BioWare Montreal. (1) Mass Effect 4 won't feature Shepard and may not follow directly on from Mass Effect 3. (2) The game runs on Frostbite 2 and shares "systems" with Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, out this year. (3) BioWare's Mike Gamble wouldn't mind exploring the histories of certain alien races.

While he retains top-level control of Mass Effect 4, Hudson's energies and those of series lead designer Preston Watamaniuk are now concentrated on the aforesaid new IP. "We are developing a whole new fictional universe at BioWare for myself and Preston [and other main Mass Effect trilogy creators.] That's kind of our next thing," he revealed. "We're focusing on building something new the way we did at the very beginning on Mass Effect."

Here are seven possible starting points for Mass Effect 4. I like the idea of an Illusive Man game best, BioWare.
