GTA 5 studio is crafting a next gen engine, more hints about GTA 5 multiplayer

Rockstar North touts "cutting edge" technology

Grand Theft Auto 5 studio Rockstar North is in the market for a Core Engine Programmer to thrash out dripping hot technological awesome-sauce for next generation consoles. That's the same Grand Theft Auto 5 that's allegedly only in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, yes.

"This is an exciting opportunity to develop cutting-edge architectures and high performance systems for current and next-gen platforms," reads the listing in question, via NowGamer. Shenanigans also appear to be afoot at Rockstar San Diego, breeding ground of Rockstar's vaunted RAGE game technology. A physics programmer advert notes that candidates will be expected to "work closely with game teams to integrate new technologies". Read between the lines, everybody.


There are a few hints, too, as to GTA 5's currently undivulged multiplayer component, which ties in with that of Max Payne 3. Rockstar San Diego seeks "a networking programmer who specializes in the synchronization of the wide range of gameplay mechanics found in a Rockstar open world game" - a position that will involve "working with engineering and design staff to integrate dynamic multiplayer into all areas of gameplay".

Assuming GTA 5 is the project referred to, this suggests that the game will blur the boundaries between the campaign world and online play, hopefully to a more seamless degree than Grand Theft Auto 4. Back at Rockstar North, there's a vacancy for a network programmer whose responsibilities include "synchronising large open-world environments within limited bandwidth constraints".

Rockstar's Dan Houser has defended the decision to keep GTA 5 current gen, arguing that "there's plenty of power in these machines". I've pondered the question of online components at some length. What are you hoping for?
