Microsoft squashes Microsoft Point phase-out rumours, 59% of OXM readers agree

But Windows 8 will default to local currency

Xbox Live purchases on Xbox 360 will continue to made using Microsoft Points, a Microsoft spokesperson has announced, putting a halt to speculation that the currency is being phased out in favour of real money.

"Microsoft Points continue to be the currency for purchasing content for the Xbox 360 console," said spokesperson told the Verge. The source confirmed that Windows 8 users will be able to use local currency to buy Xbox content - in fact, the platform will "default" to non-pretend moolah, though "current Xbox Live customers may also make a purchase using points".

We threw another one of our laughable "surveys" earlier this week, asking players for their thoughts on the rumour. At the time of writing, 59 per cent of the 1098 respondents are in favour of keeping the Points. Sentimental value seems to play a large part in the proceedings.

The next Xbox 360 dashboard update is rumoured to land on 26th October.
