Platinum counters Bayonetta 2 cancellation rumours with teaser artwork

Bayonetta sequel has busy 24 hours

A small, violent news tornado has sprung up around idiosyncratic Japanese studio PlatinumGames overnight. According to a source, Sega has cancelled a planned Bayonetta sequel during a rearrangement of its Western operations.

As reported by card-carrying Sega fetishists Spong, the game would have starred Bayonetta alongside a new US military character, and had already entered pre-production when it was canned. Sega has declined to comment on the story.

"I have had it," lead designer Hideki Kamiya told fans on Twitter last night. "I'm not Sega man. Ask Sega." Platinum's producer Atsushi Inaba was a little more forthcoming, however, Tweeting some mock concept art alongside the teasing message: "We've heard all the rumors on the net. What do you guys think? Too bad it got cancelled, huh?" Kamiya has Retweeted Inaba's image.

There's clear desire for a Bayonetta sequel at Platinum, with Kamiya commenting in January 2010: "we obviously have love for the work we have created, so I don't see anything wrong with Bayonetta 2. Personally, I'd like to approach the world of Bayonetta from a different angle, in the form of a spin-off." Bayonetta herself is down to appear in Platinum's forthcoming multiplayer brawler Anarchy Reigns.

Canned Westernised concept art for Bayonetta surfaced last June. We loved her just the way she was. Did you?
