Halo 4's new enemies are smarter, more complex than Covenant

Master Chief's new foes won't "look different but play the same", says 343

Halo 4 will be a blend of the familiar and the unfamiliar, according to 343 Industries creative director Josh Holmes, and nowhere will this be more apparent than in the enemy roster. Stepping into the chunky titanium greaves of Master Chief, you'll meet, greet and slaughter old friends like the Covenant Elites, Grunts and Jackals. But you'll also face brand new enemies with their own abilities, weapons and tactics.

"We wanted to add a whole new class of enemies that Chief would discover when he crash lands on Requiem, this strange planet that he's never been to before," Holmes told Game Informer (via JustPushStart). "That gave us different challenges for the player to learn to go up against, but also new opportunities and tools, both in terms of abilities and weapons that come from those enemies."

"From a creative standpoint, in approaching that enemy we wanted to create something that played very differently from the Covenant," he went on. "We didn't want it to just feel like something that looks different but still plays the same way. We wanted to create a set of enemies that work together in a collaborative way, where each one of those enemies builds on and accentuates the abilities of the others.

"So when you face an individual enemy they offer one challenge, but as you layer those enemies together it changes the experience in important ways and heightens the challenge. If anything, they're kind of elevated in terms of their intelligence and complexity relative to the Covenant."

We're currently digesting all the Halo 4 info that surfaced over the weekend. Look out for a round-up feature on the site soonish.
