OXM 84 - Assassin's Creed 3! Halo 4! Fez! Medal of Honor!

Ubisoft's new Colonial stabathon gets blown right open

It's rare that a high profile reboot manages to induce both a sigh of a relief and a sharp intake of breath, and not just because that's physiologically impossible. As a rule, reboots are either comfortably familiar (e.g. XCOM: Enemy Territory) or exciting departures (2K Marin's XCOM shooter). Assassin's Creed 3 straddles this tricky line expertly, however - it's still founded on the idea of an acrobatic hero in a world of slowpokes, but good gravy what a world: ice-dusted forest canopies, frozen streams, ferocious massed gun battles. You'll read much, much more about the new Assassin's Creed in our latest issue, on shelves this very moment.

Also in this issue, the fruits of our explorations at this year's Microsoft Spring Showcase and Game Developer Conference. Look out for Halo 4, Forza Horizon, Minecraft, Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Fable Heroes previews, plus new thoughts on Max Payne 3, The Witcher 2, Darksiders 2, Fez and Dragon's Dogma, the game Matt won't stop blathering about. At the back of the mag, the latest OXM Investigates looks at what happens when games break the fourth wall (e.g. HINT: I'M A GAME), and there's an interview with the man behind That Call of Duty Advert to chase down last month's fabulous dissection of movie games.

This month's cover disc is a retro themed affair, with playable Marathon Durandal, Sega Bass Fishing, Doom 2, Quake Arena Arcade and Super Contra demos. There are exclusive SSX Gamerpics for powder lovers. (As in, powder snow. Not (cough) other kinds of powder. We're still a ways from offering hardcore drugs as a cover mount.)

If physically plucking a copy from the shelf is too arduous, you can order a copy online with free delivery, download it to your Android tablet or buy for £2 cheaper on Apple Newsstand. Enjoy.
