Modern Warfare 3 tips: top eight developer tactics

All your bases are belong to Sledgehammer and Infinity Ward

Imagine our surprise when, on booting up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for a post-review session, we found ourselves butting heads with a gaggle of level 50 players. You may not need to imagine, actually. The latest Modern Warfare has been out since the weekend in some regions, and the old guard have been caning it (and, by extension, everybody else) for dozens of hours.

Are you just starting out? Or have you stuffed a few matches under your belt, but still feel out of your depth? Consider the tips below, thrust upon us during interviews with creative director Brett Robins, producer Mark Rubin and community manager Guy Beahm. Not bought the game yet? Modern Warfare 3 online can be a perilous place.

1. MOVE THE SPAWN
"You always spawn in safe areas near friendlies - so if you're spawning in a section where you're getting trapped, try to outflank and the spawns will move with you." (Mark Rubin)

2. DRESS FOR THE OCCASION
"Choose your streaks to match the map. On Jungle maps, the team that controls
the air will control the game - so you definitely want Air Support up there." (Guy Beahm)

3. DON'T JUST GO FOR THE KILLS
"It's not just getting kills, but also flag captures. Every time I capture a flag my streak moves up a point, and I'm getting rewards for just playing in my style." (Mark Rubin)

4. STRIKE CAREFULLY
"Pick your Strike Package based on your style, and understand that each one of those fits better or worse into a different situation. Don't get caught up just doing Assault." (Mark Rubin)

5. DOUBLE UP ON YOUR LOAD-OUT
"Clone your favourite load-out. Change one class to Assault, and one to Support. You can switch between different types of strike package." (Michael Condrey)

6. LEVEL UP ON YOUR GUNS
"Some of the perks that used to exist on their own are now within the weapon levelling. You can now level up your weapon to use two attachments on one gun." (Brett Robins)

7. DUAL SCOPE
"If you're not a sniper but want magnification, check out the new dual-scope attachment. It'll allow magnified scope for range but also use the red dot for close quarters." (Michael Condrey)

8. PLAY TOGETHER
"In Kill Confirmed, work as a team. You can have two or three snipers that stay distant from the dog tags, monitoring the battlefield and taking out the enemy." (Guy Beahm)
