An Epic staffer has stated that the company has cancelled previous plans to have its prior games unlock items in Gears of War 3.
UPDATE: Joe Graf posted further clarification which we've added below.
Previously, the company's Design Director Cliff Bleszinski had said that playing games like Unreal Tournament 3, Shadow Complex, previous Gears games and the upcoming Bulletstorm would unlock special items in Gears 3.
That won't now be happening for non-Gears games, according to a Twitter update from lead gameplay programmer Joe Graf.
"Turns out that we can't read the Bulletstorm, Shadow Complex, and UT3 achievements for unlocks in Gears3 afterall," he wrote last night. "Sorry about that all."
This is due to the restrictions that underpin the Live data; while the service makes it very easy to pull out your Gamercard and Avatar, digging any deeper requires devious and unsupported manipulation of the Xbox Live servers. Because Epic's other games are classified separately from Gears, they can't affect it directly.
However, Graf later confirmed previous Gears games will count towards unlocks. "All of the Gears games are in our publisher/dev family, so those we will reward with unlocks," he wrote. Asked if it was a legal issue, he described it as "a tech problem caused by biz :("
Epic is over in London at the moment for the Bulletstorm reviews - we can't say what we thought of it, yet, but we will recommend you look out for our review on the 22nd February.
